About Bobbie O’Steen
Bobbie O’Steen is a New York-based writer and film historian, dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art with film students, professionals and the movie-going public. She is an Emmy-nominated editor and author of two acclaimed books about editing. Cut to the Chase is based on interviews with her late husband and colleague, legendary editor Sam O’Steen; and her second book, The Invisible Cut, deconstructs classic movie scenes through a cut-by-cut analysis.
She has taught graduate school workshops at NYU and contributes commentary and interviews about the art of editing for The Criterion Collection releases. She has moderated numerous panels honoring master editors at EditFest as well as NYU, Emerson College, UCLA and 92Y Tribeca. She is now partnered with Manhattan Edit Workshop to regularly host her evening event series in NYC called “Inside the Cutting Room.” She has also written for such publications as ACE’s CinemaEditor Magazine, which recently named her “Film Editing’s Greatest Champion.”

"Sight, Sound & Story" - Soundshow NY: "Life of Pi" Part 3.  From Sight, Sound, and Story on June 8th, 2013.

Starting in 1982 Eugene Gearty was one of the first digital Sound Editor/Designers in the film industry. He pioneered the use of the access and the Synclavier systems for use in creating and editing sound effects for movies such as "Silence of the Lambs," "Do The Right Thing," "Men in Black," and "The Hudsucker Proxy." He has worked with many New York directors including Joel & Ethan Coen , Jim Jaramusch and Lee Daniels. He has been nominated for an Academy Award 3 times and won an Oscar for "Hugo." He has won the Golden Lion (Taiwan) and the Hong Kong “Oscar"(China) for "Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon." He has also won the MPSE golden reel for Sound Effects editing for "The Aviator."  His Television credits include "Boardwalk Empire" for which he received an Emmy for his work on the Martin Scorsese directed pilot.  After being nominated for an Oscar in 2013 for his work on Ang Lee’s "Life of Pi," he has been working  on  Scorsese's "The Wolf of Wall Street "and with the Savannah College of Art and Design on expanding their Sound Design program.

Phil Stockton is a Supervising Sound Editor who has worked on an array of feature films and documentaries for such directors as Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, John Sayles, Ang Lee and many others. Phil has been recognized numerous times in the form of awards and nominations including an Oscar and a BAFTA (British Academy Award) nomination for “Life of Pi,” and an Oscar and BAFTA win for “Hugo.” He also has 3  Emmy nominations with a win for “Boardwalk Empire,” and several MPSE Golden Reel Awards – most recently for “Life of Pi“ and ”George Harrison, Living in the Material World.“

Phil has had the good fortune to work on over 120 films including such classics as "Raising Arizona," "Goodfellas," "Do The Right Thing," "Etenal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" and "Brokeback Mountain." He recently finished working on "The Wolf of Wall Street for Martin Scorsese."

Sam Miille has been working in sound for film for nearly a decade.  In that time he’s collaborated with the Oscar winning team of Eugene Gearty and Phil Stockton on such works as "Life of Pi," "Hugo," "Shutter Island," "Boardwalk Empire," "Miracle At Santa Anna," and "The Departed."  Sam assists Mr Gearty in the technical and organizational aspects of the fast paced and dynamic world of Sound Fx editing. Sam has supervised the sound on episodes of "Independent Lens" and "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom," along with several independent films and short subjects.

"Life of Pi" is a 2012 American 3D adventure drama film based on Yann Martel's 2001 novel of the same name. Directed by Ang Lee, the film's adapted screenplay was written by David Magee, and it stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Rafe Spall, Gérard Depardieu, Tabu, and Adil Hussain.

The storyline revolves around an Indian man named Piscine Molitor "Pi" Patel, living in Canada and telling a novelist about his life story and how at 16 he survives a shipwreck in which his family dies, and is stranded in the Pacific Ocean on a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker.

"Sight Sound and Story" is an annual event presented by Manhattan Edit Workshop that brings audiences "behind the scenes" with legends of visual storytelling.
Each year the one day summit brings together a collection of diverse and intriguing high-profile speaker series to discuss the evolving world of post-production.

Panels topics include the art and processes of editing film & television, exploring ground-breaking interactive media, experiencing the magic of feature sound design, taking a look at the vital roles of the VFX artist, and deconstructing key scenes from fiction and documentary favorites

VIDEO: Editor Kelley Dixon, ACE on Creative Freedom in Hit TV Series "Breaking Bad"

Kelley Dixon, ACE got her start in post production in multiple capacities in the editing room on the features "Reservoir Dogs" and "Good Will Hunting" as well as TV's "Without a Trace," and "Revelations."  Kelley got her big break after many long years as an assistant when her editor, Lynne Willingham cut the "Breaking Bad" pilot and she became the series' second editor.  She's been nominated for four ACE awards and six Emmys - winning one Emmy in 2013 - for her work on "Breaking Bad."

Kelley also edited on HBO's "Luck," Showtime's "Shameless," AMC's "The Walking Dead," "Halt and Catch Fire" and "Preacher."  And she's currently working on the "Breaking Bad" spin-off, "Better Call Saul."

"Breaking Bad" is an American crime drama television series created and produced by Vince Gilligan. The show originally aired on the AMC network for five seasons, from January 20, 2008, to September 29, 2013. It tells the story of Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling high school chemistry teacher diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer. Together with his former student Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), White turns to a life of crime, producing and selling crystallized methamphetamine to secure his family's financial future before he dies, while navigating the dangers of the criminal world. The title is from a Southern colloquialism meaning to "raise hell." Breaking Bad is set and was filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Bill Pankow, ACE, has enjoyed a long collaboration with renowned director Brian De Palma, beginning as an associate editor on the films "Dressed to Kill" and "Scarface." Pankow graduated to editor on "Body Double" and continued his affiliation with De Palma on such films as "The Untouchables," "Casualties of War," "Carlito's Way," "Redacted," and "Femme Fatale," for which he received the Seattle Film Critics Best Editing award for 2002. Bill has also collaborated with Charles Stone III on his films "Drumline," "Paid In Full" and "Mr. 3000 "and with Jean Francois Richet on "Assault On Precinct 13." "Carlito's Way" is a 1993 American crime drama film directed by Brian De Palma, based on the novels "Carlito's Way" and "After Hours" by Judge Edwin Torres. The film adaptation was scripted by David Koepp. It stars Al Pacino and Sean Penn, with Penelope Ann Miller, Luis Guzmán, John Leguizamo, and Viggo Mortensen in supporting roles. Jeffrey Wolf, ACE, worked with director Ted Demme on "The Ref," "Beautiful Girls," "Monument Avenue" and "Life." In "White Like Me," from Saturday Night Live sketch in the mid 1980’s, Eddie Murphy goes undercover using makeup to see what it is like to be white. The satirical skit follows Murphy as he goes through a number of everyday experiences as a white man. He is shocked to see the many privileges and benefits he receives from other white New Yorkers – from a cocktail party in a city bus to free money at the bank.

Anne V. Coates, ACE, is a renowned British editor who has worked on over sixty films, including the classic epic "Lawrence of Arabia," for which she received an Academy Award. She has garnered four additional Academy Award nominations for "Becket," "The Elephant Man," "In the Line of Fire," and "Out of Sight." She was awarded BAFTA’s highest honor, The Academy Fellowship, as well as the Career Achievement Award from American Cinema Editors - and last year Coates was only the second editor besides Dede Allen to receive a career achievement award from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
