Students will draft cover letters and resumes, which will be refined over the span of the class, and also discuss with instructors about interview strategies and job applications, as well as how to appropriately set rates and find the right work for each graduate’s unique interests.

Our LIVE online workshop will run Monday - Friday from 10am EST - 6pm EST with an hour lunch. These can be purchased separately, or Manhattan Edit Workshop can direct students to free or temporary options. Particularly Season Two, Episode Five. With the little girl who's doing all the stunts and everything. When you got the script, how did you envision shooting that versus how it came out? Because it looks it's it's quite a chaotic and exciting episode, I guess you could say.

PH - I think it was, it was pretty close to the way Bill Hader and I talked about the way we were gonna shoot it. I mean, for him, he didn't want to sort of glorify violence, even though it's all about the violence on the show. So he wanted to do like really long takes composed with them taking time to pan across the room or to track and let the shot play out instead of like covering it in a million pieces. So we watched "The Apartment" and also "Roma" for inspiration. Bill and I thought a lot about that episode, and the little girl was really amazing as well. So she did a bunch of the stunts.

Manhattan Edit Workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12826503807699579202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334782794752858144.post-73837224541522303652021-12-23T11:08:00.002-05:002021-12-23T11:08:32.907-05:00Sight, Sound & Story: Live Goes “Inside the Cutting Room of Sam O’Steen” on November 19th

Sight, Sound & Story: Live Goes “Inside the Cutting Room of Sam O’Steen”

The Sight, Sound & Story: Live monthly event series continues in November with Author & Film Historian Bobbie O’Steen and a panel of seven editors

Manhattan Edit Workshop’s “Sight, Sound & Story: Live” monthly online event series continues in November with an in-depth look at the work of legendary editor Sam O’Steen.

Inside Episode V: This panel will honor legendary editor Sam O’Steen. It was it was the day for night section when you going into the movie that that was going to be was challenging because the the whole scene was shot during the daytime and it was two to three stops overexposed so it looked nothing like night. So that was a challenge but we had a great method. The idea of it was to overexpose the footage by a couple of stops, which means you have lots of range in your shadows. Then but you don't clip your highlights, make sure that if someone was on set watching scopes and making sure nothing was being clipped. Then in the grade we were able to take that shot, expose it down and got a nice creaminess to it but then we can go in and isolate anything we want in the shadows and lift them up and get all the little bits of detail in there. So you end up with a very, you know, affected kind of look, but it works really well. But to do that It requires a ton of more though. So it took, you know, we knew it going into it. So that was we were like, alright, that aside a few months here, and we'll work on that scene.

Manhattan Edit Workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12826503807699579202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334782794752858144.post-52293251647137603112021-07-15T10:00:00.000-04:002021-07-15T10:00:00.203-04:00Inside the World of Color with Acclaimed Colorist Stephen Nakamura<img class="img-fluid" src="https://kajabi-storefronts-production.kajabi-cdn.com/kajabi-storefronts-production/blogs/5169/images/CwAb4vdiSwORcJJ0HhxY_Stephen-Nakamura-Exposure.jpg" style="background-color: white; border-style: none; box-sizing: inherit; display: block; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; height: auto; margin: 1rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" />

Colorist Stephen Nakamura spoke with Filmmaker U to talk about his prolific career. Stephen, thanks for coming on the show.

Stephen Nakamura (SN) - Sure. Glad to be here. Thank you.

GB - I've listed off a lot of films here. But one of the things I've noticed is there in a couple situations, you've actually got directors that you have long time worked with including David Fincher and Ridley Scott. I don't hear that as much with colorists and I'm wondering how did these relationships evolve? How do you go about developing relationships like that, so that they last long term?

SN - Well, I think the real key for colorist is you really need to get in tune with the director sensibility. Most people go back to the same person that cuts their hair, right, because you don't have to tell this person how to cut your hair, it's a lot because they know what I like. It's really your ability.

When we're on this side of the production and post production, to really say. Hey, I'm going to try to get in tune with this director, and what their sensibilities are. And once you can connect that way, then there's a real shorthand for communication. Which makes it really simple for them, you know, because they're, typically during the finishing process, they're doing the mix. They're doing audio. They're finalizing visual effects. So they're working on in a whole bunch of different areas. I think the last thing they really want is to just be doing more minutia stuff with color. So if they have a shorthand with their colorists, and they kind of trust it, their colorists can paint pictures for them that the way that they find pleasing for a particular movie that they're doing, then they'll come back. Especially if you make their lives easy for them also.

Manhattan Edit Workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12826503807699579202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334782794752858144.post-53963544872986052742021-07-12T10:00:00.004-04:002021-07-12T10:00:00.202-04:00Take a Look Behind the Green Screen with HBO Visual Effects Artist Debra Khoo-Jeffrey

Filmmaker U recently spoke with Visual Effects Artist Debra Khoo-Jeffrey. So that's what I chose to study.

GB - Where did you come from originally?

DKJ - I came from Malaysia. Currency wise, it's not as strong as most countries. So getting Adobe software and Flame Autodesk, it was quite an expensive field to take on. My first job was at one of the top five post-production boutiques facilities called the HQ Pose. They specialize in TV commercials, and at that time, Dunhill cigarette ads were big. Motion graphic designers did not really exist and it was at its birthing stage. From then on, I learned mounting storyboards, Photoshop, printing it out, and then started to do style frames. Then began to do text graphics elements for online compositors which at that time it was Henry. So that was fun! I got exposed to Flame and I was like, "Why is everyone calling smoke flame? Then after 13 years, I think in 2014 I migrated to the states.

Manhattan Edit Workshophttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12826503807699579202noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8334782794752858144.post-15302047639138079032021-07-07T10:00:00.001-04:002021-07-07T10:00:00.233-04:00Academy Award-winning Sound Designer of "Hugo" Eugene Gearty Talks Sound in Film

<img class="img-fluid" src="https://kajabi-storefronts-production.kajabi-cdn.com/kajabi-storefronts-production/blogs/5169/images/EodOt779Q02zjPjpnXGa_eugene_1.jpeg" style="background-color: white; border-style: none; box-sizing: inherit; display: block; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; height: auto; margin: 1rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 30px; text-align: center;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px;">Oscar-winning sound designer<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px;"> <span style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bolder;">Eugene Gearty<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px;">, joined Filmmaker U to discuss staying focused during the COVID-19 pandemic, getting the job you want, and to answer our questions about the world of Sound in film. Today, we're talking to Eugene Gearty, who has worked on some of the best films of the last 30 or 40 years. So before we open things up, I guess, give us a sense of what's going on on your end, in terms of sound and what's happening with COVID-19.
<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 1rem;">Eugene Gearty (EG) - For me it's been a little rough schedule wise, although I am very fortunate to be working, helping Terry Malick on his next film, and it's truly an honor to to work with one of my film director idols that I just, you know, think is a true artist working. I can't talk too much about the project, but I've been helping them with their rough cut. It's just sounds so they can help them edit the picture. It's not necessarily going to be in the final, but it's like temp music in a way.
<p style="background-color: white; box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; margin-bottom: 1rem; margin-top: 1rem;">GB - What's your go to hobby to relax?

<span style="box-sizing: inherit; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px; font-weight: bolder;">EG<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: "Open Sans"; font-size: 18px;">- We're in a community where we can walk the dog. Every Friday we invite a film professional to chat with us. Today I am joined by Bob Richman, the cinematographer for some incredible documentaries such as "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster," "The September Issue," "An Inconvenient Truth," and "Paradise Lost."

Bob, when you are preparing for a shoot with a new director, how do you get inside the director’s head so that you understand what they're going for with the film?

Bob Richman (BR) - At this point, directors usually understand what I do and they hire me because of that. In a vérité situation, I really consider myself a co-director. It's like basketball, the coach can tell the player when to shoot and where to go, but he has to trust the player knows what he is doing. The director has to trust me. Having said that, every director is different. I've been working with Joe Berlinger for years and we're usually on the same page. I worked with Nathaniel Kahn, the director of "My Architect," and the way we worked is that we would talk before shooting, and then we talk after shooting, very rarely did we talk during the filming. We'll talk about what we think we're going to get but there's always that danger of taking too much about what you think you are going to get because things never quite turn out the way you expect. Oftentimes, you can make the mistake of missing something important because you've thought too much ahead of time about what you think a scene is going to give you. Something happens and at the time it doesn't seem like it's relevant and so you don't shoot it. Then later on, you say that was important! Every time I am in Sundance, they send these questions around for all the DPs and it's the same question. They always ask me do I bake-in the look. If you're doing a feature film and narrative film, you need to think about how it should look, but if you're doing a vérité film, you don't even know how the film is going to turn out! So you just want to make it look good. You don't want to bake in any look that isn't appropriate until you know what the finished film is. So it's always an act of discovery. At least that's the way I look at documentaries. That's what makes them fun for me. That it is a journey you go on with the director.

GB - You and I have been chatting about teaching. One of the scenes I show in my class is from "Harlan County, USA" and it's the union scene just before the gunshot goes off. The reason I show that is because of the way the cinematographer was able to capture all the people in the union meeting. It seemed as if the cinematographer knew who each individual was and how they would play out in the edit. How much research do you do beforehand so you know each of the people in a large situation like that? How much is it based on what's happening live?

BR - Usually, I don't! Hopefully the director has done that research. That's the wonderful thing that a director can do for a cinema vérité cinematographer is to build trust with the characters. Start by building trust, and getting to know who the characters are. You never know what character will emerge. You might assume that one person will be the lead character, but then some other character emerges and dominates the film. That's where a director has to really have discipline to say, "Okay, the film's going to be about this person. Even though I got great footage of these other people, this is who the film is about." I have to build my own trust with the director and my sound person, because trust is really the glue that holds those type of films to together and trust takes time. The first few times I film someone it is oftentimes awkward, and not great. Then as time goes on, if you've done your job right, and you have built trust, and love, they open up more and more. You get to know them, and they get to know you. Oftentimes right at the end, the last filming you do, it's like peeling away an onion. You say, oh, now I'm getting it. What happens to me often is, I get to that point, and then the film's over, and then I have to start another film and I can't understand why I’m not getting this great footage. Although setting up a remote workflow can seem overwhelming at first, with so many considerations and a plethora of available gear options, getting started doesn’t have to be complicated, and even if you’re already working remotely, there are subtle tweaks you can make to improve your existing workflow.

FREE LIVE EVENT | April 7th, 2021 | 5:00 PM EDT/ 2:00PM PDT

Join us live on Youtube Live:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0jH0XoZKmU&feature=youtu.be

Join us live on Facebook Live:
https://www.facebook.com/events/592260944990772/

this key action set piece from "Star Trek Into Darkness."

Mary Jo Markey, ACE, is an accomplished editor in both film and
television. After cutting a series of independent films and television
movies, Markey began her collaboration with JJ Abrams as one of the
editors of the TV series "Felicity" during its first three seasons
(1998-2000). Markey then moved over to edit the first two seasons of
"Alias," during which she received her first Emmy nomination. Later, in
2005, Markey won the Emmy for Drama Series Editing for her work on the
"Lost" pilot. In 2006, Markey’s collaboration with JJ Abrams moved to
the large screen with "Mission Impossible III." Their work together
continued with the HBO pilot "Anatomy of Hope," 2009’s "Star Trek"
(which led to an ACE Eddie nomination), the "Undercovers" pilot, "Super
8," and "Star Trek Into Darkness" in 2013.

Besides projects with Abrams, Markey has edited the award-winning HBO
film "Life Support," which was selected as the closing night film for
the 2007 Sundance Film Festival (and brought her an additional Emmy
nomination as well as an ACE Eddie nomination), "The Perks of Being a
Wallflower," "The Great Wall," directed by master of Chinese cinema
Zhang Yimou, and the sci-fi thriller "Life."

About the Moderator: Bobbie O’Steen is a New York-based writer and film
historian, dedicated to sharing the editor’s invisible art with
students, professionals, and the movie-going public. She is an
Emmy®-nominated editor and author of two acclaimed books about editing:
“Cut to the Chase,” based on interviews with her late husband and
colleague, legendary editor Sam O’Steen; and “The Invisible Cut,” which
deconstructs classic movie scenes through a cut-by-cut analysis. Her
latest book is an authoritative, media-rich eBook called “Making the Cut
at Pixar” about the editor’s pioneering role in computer animation.

Sight Sound and Story" is an annual event presented by Manhattan Edit
Workshop that brings audiences "behind the scenes" with legends of
visual storytelling. Each year the one day summit brings together a
collection of diverse and intriguing high-profile speaker series to
discuss the evolving world of post-production. Panels topics have
included the art and processes of editing film & television,
exploring ground-breaking interactive media, the fast pace of cutting
sports television, getting the real from reality television,
experiencing the magic of feature sound design, taking a look at the
vital roles of the VFX artist, and deconstructing key scenes from
fiction and documentary favorites.

For more information go to https://SightSoundandStory.com.
