This five-day hands-on workshop explores all aspects of documentary editing - from the aesthetic background and creative decision-making that make a good story great, to road-tested workflow methods for picture and sound that every editor should know. During the week, we'll screen and deconstruct clips from a wide range of non-fiction genres, from the earliest experiments of Thomas Edison to the cutting-edge documentaries of today. In addition, we'll cut a number of exercises using real footage from real docs - looking at how editing can affect character and story, and create or alter realty. Each day ends with a screening and critique of each other's work. You'll learn proven methods of media management for long-form projects, effective approaches to structure and storytelling, and basic principles of sound design geared towards cleaning up an edit for festivals and broadcast.
