Call for 2015 Karen Schmeer Fellowship is Open!

The Open Call for submissions for our 2015 Fellowship begins today! The online application must be completed by September 30, 2014. There is no fee to apply. 2015 will mark the fifth year of honoring the memory of our friend and gifted editor Karen Schmeer. Inspired by Karen's generous nature, the Fellowship assists emerging documentary editors by developing their talent, expanding their creative community, and furthering their career aspirations. We work with American Cinema Editors (ACE), Manhattan Edit Workshop, SXSW and many other valuable partners to offer a wide array of opportunities for promising editors. If you know an editor or editors who would benefit from this opportunity, please send them to our website. Our 2014 Fellow, Colin Nusbaum, has already had a busy year. He's worked on Andrea Scott's documentary, Florence, Arizona, cut a fundraising trailer for director Rebecca Haimowitz, and is currently editing a short film about photographer Phillip Toledano for director Josh Seftel. A few weeks ago he attended the Sundance Documentary Edit and Story Lab as an assistant editor fellow. The feature documentary he completed last year, "Tough Love," has been playing at festivals across the country. His Fellowship benefits have brought him to the SXSW Film Festival, IFFBoston, Manhattan Edit Workshop's "Sight, Sound & Story" seminar, and he took an Avid class at MEWshop. He's been working with his mentors Jonathan Oppenheim, David Teague and Jean Tsien, A.C.E. and is working with POV on an ongoing series of posts about the "under-appreciated process and craft of documentary editors." We're excited to see what the rest of the year brings for Colin. The experience includes mentorship; passes to SXSW, IFFBoston, Stranger than Fiction, DOC NYC, ACE EditFest, Rooftop Films, and MEWshop's Sight, Sound and Story summit; travel, accommodations, and per diem to two of those events; a MEWshop editing class, a $1000 Rooftop Films equipment rental credit; a $1000 cash award; "Special" membership in ACE (includes a subscription to Cinema Editor magazine); a $250 Powell's Books gift certificate; a portrait session with Tanya Braganti Photography; and a DVD collection of all 13 of Karen’s films.
